RECONSTRUCTION OF THE ANAL SPHINCTER BY GRACILIS MUSCLE TRANSFER

Abstract
A serious infirmity, which disturbs family and married life, and social activity, anal incontinence unfortunately has the reputation of incurability for the public as well as among medical people, and causes severe socio-psychologic difficulties for the patient.

Principle causes of anal incntinence are

1. Traumatic origin

a. obstetrical trauma. b. Accidental c. operative lesions

2. Anorectal malformations

3. Neurologic lesions of the cauda equina, the spinal cord

4. Total rectal prolapsus

Surgical treatment of anal incontinence depends on each kind of incontinence.

1. Restoration of utilization of an intact sphincter

2. Constriction of a relaxed sphincter

3. Repair of a divided and retracted sphincter, and

4. Reconstruction of a contractive muscular analus by local or pedicled plastic operation.

Authors reconstructed one case of anal incontinence due to trauma by gracilis muscle transfer with good result.
